For the first time since 2011, the Pirates are bogged down in a 10-game losing streak.
Greg Brown has the story of yesterday’s loss in Washington.
The Pirates have the day off before starting a three-game series tomorrow night against Cleveland at PNC Park.
Colin Moran missed his third straight game after suffering back spasms Sunday in Milwaukee, but manager Derek Shelton said it does not appear that Moran will need to go to the injured list.
In his weekly injury update, Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said pitcher Steven Brault, who has been out all season with a back strain, is “making strides” in his throwing progression in Bradenton and he could rejoin the Bucs in late July.
Tomczyk said pitcher Trevor Cahill will be reevaluated tomorrow after re-aggravating his lower calf strain, while pitcher Luis Oviedo has resumed throwing but the Pirates are limiting his running. He has a left quad strain.
Pitcher Jose Soriano will miss the next 16 months before resuming baseball activities after having a Tommy John “revision” surgery on Tuesday.
Two top minor league infield prospects are also out with injuries. Tomczyk said last year’s top draft pick, Nick Gonzalez, will resume full baseball activities later this month after suffering a fractured finger, and Altoona second baseman Ji-Hwan Bae will not require surgery for his Grade 1 sprained MCL, but will miss four to six weeks.
If you think it’s tough being a Pirates’ fan these days, consider the Arizona Diamondbacks. They lost to the Giants, 13-7 yesterday. They tied the 1943 Philadelphia A’s and the 1963 Mets for the longest road losing streaks in history, 22. The D-Backs are in the midst of a 13-game losing streak.
