Howard Smith, a Pittsburgher who co-founded a program to offer children of all socio-economic backgrounds the opportunity to learn and play hockey, has been nominated for the National Hockey League’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award, which is named in honor of the NHL’s first black player.
Smith helped to create Pittsburgh I.C.E. – (which stands for Inclusion Creates Equity) – and also programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities and veterans with service-connected disabilities.
