State Senator Joe Pittman has announced the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved legislation concerning diverting state funds from essential transportation improvement projects to support the Pennsylvania State Police.
Senate Bill 242 speeds up the timeline for reducing the diversion of money from the state’s Motor License Fund to the state police. The money originally was to go to highway and bridge improvement projects, cutting the timeline in place down to four years. That timeline was originally put in place as part of the 2016-2017 state budget, when funding from the Motor License Fund was capped at $801 million. The idea was to reduce that funding down to $500 million over a 10-year period. Pittman’s new bill cuts the remaining time down to four years.
State Police costs would be absorbed by the general fund. Pittman said in his statement that he felt the time was right to speed up the timeline as the state’s revenue outlook is improving.
The bill now heads to the full senate.
