A growing number of colleges and universities across the commonwealth are going to require covid-19 vaccines for students to attend classes on campus in the fall, but IUP is not one of them. In fact, none of the State System schools can legally require the vaccine unless the legislature passes a bill to that effect and the governor signs it into law.
Duquesne University announced yesterday that it will require the vaccine for returning students, joining Chatham and Carnegie Mellon. Others are strongly recommending or offering incentives for students to get vaccinated, while still others are considering their options.
The 14 State System universities are specifically governed by state law, which at this time requires only a meningitis vaccine, and there are no current bills introduced that would require a covid vaccine.
