Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers yesterday announced the reopening of some recreational facilities at Corps-operated sites, including several in the area.
The Corps says some of the sites have already reopened while others will reopen later in the summer recreational season.
Among those reopening in our area are:
- Loyalhanna Lake (pictured), located outside of Saltsburg in Loyalhanna Township, Westmoreland County. The Bush Recreation Area reopened May 7th with a new playground. The Corps says new electrical pedestals will be added soon.
- The Conemaugh River Lake, also outside of Saltsburg, where there are no Army Corps- operated campgrounds, but which has a new pavilion installed over its outdoor fitness area, and improvements have been made to the existing playground area.
- The Mahoning Creek Lake, outside of Dayton, which has no Army Corps-operated campgrounds, but has a picnic area.
- Crooked Creek Lake in Burrell Township, Armstrong County. The campground there reopened May 14. The Corps says tee pads for all nine holes at the lake’s disc golf course are completed, and a new courtesy dock for the boat launch area will be installed soon.
Campground reservations can now be made online through the Recreation.gov website.
