Pitt wide receiver Tre Tipton has been named the recipient of the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award, which is presented for overcoming “great personal, academic and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success.”
The Apollo Ridge grad is entering his seventh year at Pitt, having overcome devastating injuries and emotional issues that led to four suicide attempts. Ironically, Tipton said a physical injury, a collapsed lung suffered against Miami in 2016, helped him overcome his depression and ultimately led to him founding an advocacy group called LOVE, an acronym for “Living Out Victoriously Everyday”, which helps student-athletes deal with the pressures of mixing academics and athletics.
BASKETBALL
A simmering disagreement between Pitt basketball coach Jeff Capel and Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot has shot down the resumption of The City Game, which will not be on the schedule for the third straight season. Dambrot said yesterday that he doubts if Pitt and Duquesne will play “as long as coach Capel and coach Dambrot are the coaches,” because of Pitts demand that all games be played at the Petersen Events Center.
