The State Senate yesterday unanimously passed Senator Joe Pittman’s bill to allow volunteer fire departments, veterans organizations, and other non-profits to conduct online small games of chance fundraisers in order to cope with the restrictions of the pandemic.
Pittman took to the floor of the Senate to explain the bill, which he was compelled to introduce because many fire companies already are conducting online fundraisers, but questions have been raised as to whether or not state law allows it.
Licensees would be required to verify age and residency of those who are participating in the fundraisers. Fire companies and other charities last year lost their ability to hold traditional fundraisers due to pandemic restriction imposed by the emergency disaster declaration.
