Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate went up slightly over the month of April.
The state department of Labor and Industry announced today that April’s statewide unemployment rate went up a tenth of a percentage point over the month to 7.4 percent. Last year at this time, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 16.2 percent as the full effect of the Covid-19 pandemic was felt throughout the state.
The U.S. unemployment rate also went up by a tenth of a percentage point in April, bringing the federal unemployment rate to 6.1 percent.
The state’s civilian labor force increased by 2,000 during the month as unemployment went up slightly. The total number of non-farm jobs went down 4,400 to 5,666,500 in April. Jobs increased in six of the 11 industry super sectors. The largest volume gain was seen in construction, with 3,400 jobs added. The largest decline over the month was in professional and business services, as they lost 6,500 jobs. Over the year, nonfarm jobs went up by over 700,000, with the largest gain from last April seen in Leisure and Hospitality.
The unemployment rate for Indiana County is expected to be released later this month.
