Evgeni Malkin will be with the Penguins in New York tonight for Game Three of their playoff series against the Islanders. Whether or not he will be in uniform is an open question.
The series is tied, 1-1. Malkin has missed the first two games of the series with a suspected right knee injury suffered in the closing minutes of the last regular season game against Buffalo. He has been practicing with his teammates in a full-contact black jersey, but has not been deemed ready to return to action yet. Backup goalie Casey DeSmith did not accompany the team to New York as he continues to deal with an undisclosed injury.
Coach Mike Sullivan did not have any news on defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who was hurt for the second straight game on Tuesday but did continue to play. The Penguins canceled practice yesterday.
Sullivan says the Penguins have studied the video of Tuesday night’s win and they will take the lessons learned from the review into tonight’s third game.
Sullivan says the Penguins power play unit is aware that the aggressiveness of the Islanders’ penalty kill could provide an opening.
Sullivan says any NHL playoff series is going to be intense, and this series is no different.

In the other NHL East series, Craig Smith scored 5:48 into the second overtime to lift the Bruins to a 3-2 win over the Capitals in Boston. The Bruins lead the series, 2-1.
