The Penguins lost Game 1 of their Stanley Cup First Round playoff series with the New York Islanders, 4-3, in overtime at PPG Paints Arena on Sunday.
Kyle Palmieri scored twice for the Islanders, including the overtime goal at 16:30.
Sidney Crosby and Kasperi Kapanen scored, and Tristan Jarry made 37 saves for the Penguins, who played without forward Evgeni Malkin.
The Penguins led, 2-1, after two periods, but the Islanders’ Brock Nelson put a shot under Jarry’s glove to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead at 15:50 of the third period, but Kapanen tied it 3-3 with a wrist shot off the left post 31 seconds later.
Crosby scored his 190 playoff point (69 goals, 121 assists) in 169 playoff games, which tied Brett Hull (103 goals, 87 assists in 202 games) for seventh in NHL history.
Game 2 of the best-of-7 series will be played at PPG Paints Arena again on Tuesday, airtime 6:30 on U92.5 FM. The Penguins will also be battling history, as teams that win Game 1 are 490-222 (68.8 percent) winning a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, including 7-1 in the first round last season.
