The Drug Enforcement Administration has released statistics for the nationwide Drug Take Back Day held on April 24th.
Statistics for the event showed that about 420 tons of unused, unwanted and expired medication was collected across the nation, with 35,000 pounds of that coming from Pennsylvania. The event is traditionally held twice a year, and is meant to prevent those medicines from getting into the hands of those who would abuse and potentially overdose on those drugs. After collection, the drugs are taken for safe disposal.
A total of 255 collection sites were set up in Pennsylvania, including two in Indiana County. Indiana County Sheriff Bob Fyock reported that 180 pounds of drugs were collected on Drug Take Back Day, which was a record-high amount for the county.
