While the Pirates have been most often connected to Vanderbilt pitchers Kumar Rocker or Jack Leiter as the likely top overall draft pick, MLB Pipeline yesterday published a mock draft predicting the pick will be a high school shortstop, either Jordan Lawlar, who’s from Dallas, Texas, or Marcelo Mayer of Chula Vista, California. It seems an odd prediction, with the Pirates’ minor league system loaded with shortstops, including top line prospects Oneil Cruz and Liover Peguero.
With no short-season minor league schedule this year, the draft will be held at the All-Star break in July rather than in early June.
