After the brutal behavior of Washington’s Tom Wilson against the New York Rangers earlier this week resulted in a small fine and no suspension, no one was expecting that Philadelphia’s Shayne Gostibehere would get much more severe punishment for a shot to the back of the Penguins’ Mark Friedman on Tuesday. But the NHL yesterday suspended Gostisbehere two games, saying the cross-check that sent Friedman into the boards after an empty-net goal came well after the score, was not meant to prevent a goal, and that Friedman could not have anticipated that he would be hit.
Meanwhile, at last night’s Rangers/Capitals rematch, three Rangers fought with three Capitals as soon as the puck dropped to start the game, and New York’s Brendan Smith fought Wilson as soon as Wilson jumped on the ice for his first shift. In all, there were six fights in that game as the Rangers took the matter into their own hands because of the league’s indifference. Wilson later left the game with an upper body injury.
The Capitals won the game, 4-2, with TJ Oshie getting a hat trick.
Washington pulled back into a first-place tie in the NHL East with the Penguins. The Pens return home for their final two regular season games, against last place Buffalo, tonight and Saturday night. You’ll hear the game on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel.
