The Penguins responded to their embarrassing loss on Monday night with a big win over the Flyers in the second game of a two-game series.

In addition to Crosby’s two goals, the Penguins got scores from Marcus Pettersson, Jake Guentzel, Jason Zucker, and Mark Friedman, who got into several scraps with his former Flyers teammates for a hit he put on Joel Farabee. The game was – to use the old hockey term – “chippy” throughout, with the Flyers’ Travis Konecny slewfooting Bryan Rust, to which Crosby responded by scrapping with Konecny. Philadelphia’s Shayne Gostisbehere threw a vicious cross-check Friedman into the end boards later in the game.

Crosby was asked after the game if the NHL was letting Washington bad boy Tom Wilson off easy with just a $5,000 fine after his outrageous conduct in the Caps’ win over the Rangers on Monday. As usual, Sidney deflected the question, mindful that the Caps might be a playoff opponent down the road.
Jake Guentzel says the Penguins gave a better effort last night.
Guentzel says the Penguins are aware that teams try to get them off their game by playing physical, sometimes borderline dirty hockey.
The Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin was called for roughing in the second period last night and now is in sole possession of second place on the Pens’ all-time penalty minutes list. Malkin’s 984 career penalty minutes pass Troy Loney, but he still has a ways to go before he reaches the all-time record of 1,048, set by Kevin Stevens.
The Penguins got a little help in the standings, as the Sabres beat the islanders for the second straight game, 4-3 in a shootout. The Devils got by the Bruins, 4-3 in overtime. The Bruins and Islanders each earn a point, placing Boston four in back of the Penguins and the Islanders five back. The Penguins lead the Capitals by two points in the NHL East. Washington was idle. Both the Caps and Bruins have two games in hand on the Penguins.
