Another great performance by Tyler Anderson was wasted last night by the Pirates, who couldn’t find their bats again. Anderson threw six no-hit innings, not giving up a hit until a seventh-inning broken bat single, but the Padres collected three hits and two runs that inning and scooped up a 2-0 win.
The Pirates managed only four hits against starter Miguel Diaz and five relievers, with former Buc Mark Melancon earning his tenth save.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates have got to find some offense.
The Pirates have signed former Atlanta Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt to a minor league contract. He’s a catcher with a lifetime major league batting average of .222. Bethancourt has also played for the Padres, Brewers, and Phillies, and in Korea. He’s also played outfield and for a brief time the Padres experimented with him as a pitcher, with an upper-90s fastball. The Pirates will start Bethancourt at Indianapolis. Bucco catcher Jacob Stallings took a pitch to the face on Sunday against the Cardinals and was not in the starting lineup last night
