With warmer weather approaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is hard at work to ensure the comfort of outdoor enthusiasts this spring.
The DEP recently kicked off the Black Fly Suppression Program and its goal is to reduce the amount of black flies across the commonwealth. While this type of fly is generally harmless to humans, DEP Secretary Patrick McDowell said in a news release that black flies can cause emotional stress to those who enjoy outdoor recreation.
He adds that more than 48 rivers and streams spanning over 35 counties will be closely monitored and treated over the spring and summer months. Treatments will through aerial and backpack sprayings of BTI, a bacterium that does not harm any aquatic ecosystem. Frequency of treatments will depend on both weather and biological conditions.
McDowell said that helicopters may be seen flying over waterways and ground crews will be spraying off bridges, so residents who see these types of things should contact their local emergency agency to confirm that it is a black fly suppression treatment.
