Wil Crowe tossed four strong innings in his first start, while Clay Holmes protected the lead, to help the Bucs beat the Minnesota Twins, 6-2, on Sunday.
Crowe, whom the Pirates activated before the game, gave up just one run while striking out three. Holmes took over in relief in the fifth inning and allowed just one baserunner off a walk. He would earn the win on the mound.
Sam Howard, Chris Stratton and David Bednar provided the backend relief for the Pirates. Stratton allowed one run on three hits in two innings of relief. Howard and Bednar combined for three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.
Adam Frazier and Gregory Polanco headlined the Pirates’ offense as they each talled a three-hit performance. Polanco singled twice and hit a home run in the eighth to seal the win, while Frazier nabbed all three of his hits on singles. Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Pirates ended their nine-game road trip with three series wins – a combined 6-3 stint – and an 11-11 overall record. They have off on Monday and will return to PNC Park on Tuesday to start a two-game series with the Kansas City Royals.
