The acting Pennsylvania Labor and Industry Secretary yesterday called on legislators to pass an increase in the state’s minimum wage.
Secretary Jennifer Berrier said that the minimum wage should be increased to $12 an hour, with a goal of raising it to $15 an hour later on. In her statement, Berrier said that this has to be done for those who have been on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19. She said that some of the front line workers have put their health and well-being at risk to provide vital services, but “often struggle to afford basic necessities themselves.” She feels that the increase will give all state residents a chance to earn, in her opinion, a fair and livable wage.
Governor Wolf has proposed the increase to $12 an hour by July 1st of this year and $15 an hour by July 1st of 2027.
