At Tuesday night’s meeting, Indiana Borough Council praised the Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl for his pro-active approach concerning police relations in the community and dealing with systemic racism.
Borough Councilman Donald Lancaster, along with several other council members, praised the chief for his efforts in keeping in communication with the citizens of Indiana County, especially in stressful times. He said that Schawl has been, in his words, way ahead of the game.
Schawl was also praised for his recent community outreach effort by scheduling meetups with the public both on Zoom video chat and in-person at Cafe Amadeus. Chief Schawl cancelled Tuesday night’s zoom meet up and Wednesday morning’s meet at Cafe Amadeus out of respect of the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial in Minneapolis.
Also receiving praise from the borough was the effort of Jim Rickard for organizing a recent community cleanup event. Borough Council Vice President Gerald Smith said that Rickard’s effort gained a lot of momentum.
In other business, council approved the purchase of a 2021 Ford EcoSport SUV from Tri-Star at a cost of $20,410 through the Costars program.
