After taking the weekend series against Edinboro, three games to one, IUP and Millersville split Monday’s doubleheader. It was also a record-setting day for second baseman Kaitlyn Beers, who became IUP softball’s all-time home run leader after she notched her 29th career shot in the series finale.
GAME ONE: IUP – 8, MILLERSVILLE – 0
Hope Jones pitched a one-hit shutout on the mound while Haleigh Zimmerman collected 5 RBIs in the first game of two on Monday.
Zimmerman got the Crimson Hawks on the board with a two-run double in the first. Jenna Rhue would drive her in later in the inning to make it a 3-0 lead. Zimmerman would pick up two more after a Millersville error in the third, and she would drive in a run in the fifth with a double. Jacey Henderson capped off the scoring later that inning with a two-run double.
Jones collected eight strikeouts along with her shutout.
GAME TWO: MILLERSVILLE – 9, IUP – 8
The Marauders jumped on Bella Bucy by piling seven runs in the first two innings of the Monday matinee.
Renee Wall would get IUP on the board with a two-run home run in the second inning, while Beers tallied her record-clinching home run in the fifth to bring the Crimson Hawks within 2.
Millersville’s Faith Willenbrock drove in the decisive run in the top half of the sixth. Margaret Russo drove in two with a home run in the bottom half, but the Marauders would hold the lead in the seventh.
IUP is 17-11 on the season and will kick-off a four-game series against Gannon on Friday.
