It took more than just overtime to determine a winner in Thursday’s matchup between the Flyers and Penguins. Philadelphia would outlast Pittsburgh, 2-1, to take home the win.
After both teams held each other scoreless in the first period, Sidney Crosby netted the game’s first goal in the second at the 5:04 mark. That goal was his 17th this season. The Flyers evened the scoring early in the third after Jakub Voracek slid one past Tristan Jarry. No one would break the score in the overtime period, ultimately sending it into a shootout.
Jake Guentzel and Claude Giroux scored one for their respective sides, however a goal by Philadelphia’s Sean Couturier would be the difference maker, as goalie Carter Hart saved Crosby’s final attempt.
In his Penguins debut, Jeff Carter created two shots-on-goal, but was unable to tally any goals or points. Carter said after the game that it was a lot of fun to be out on the ice with the Penguins. “You can tell how close these guys are,” he said. “Everyone was great to me. I wish we could have finished the job tonight, but it was a fun experience.”
Pittsburgh continues its road trip on Saturday, where the Penguins will kickoff a two-game series with the Buffalo Sabres. Coverage on U92.5 FM and the U92 Sports Channel begins at 2 p.m.
