In a game that lasted just over four hours, the Pirates evened up a four-game series with the San Diego Padres after beating them, 8-4, on Tuesday.
Both teams would also set a new record with 24 combined walks and hit-by-pitches in a single game – the first time this has happened in the modern era. Between 12 total pitchers, 17 players drew walks while the remaining seven drew a hit-by-pitch.
The Pirates are also the first team to issue 16+ walks/hit-by-pitches in a game, and win, since the St. Louis Browns did it in 1948, per Stats Perform.
Chad Kuhl gave up two runs in the top of the first, but the bullpen would shutout the Padres while holding them to just two hits throughout the remaining innings. Jacob Stallings and Erik Gonzalez combined for five RBIs and six hits, while Adam Frazier went 1-for-2 with two walks. Colin Moran drove in a run off a single on his only at-bat in the game.
Both teams return to PNC Park on Wednesday for game three, where ex-Pirate Joe Musgrove will take to the mound for San Diego. Tyler Anderson will oppose him, as he looks for his first win as a Pirate.
