The Penguins were unable to stop the New York Rangers on Tuesday and lost, 8-4.
New York scored three unanswered goals within the first 10 minutes and came away with a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Mike Matheson brought the Pens within three in the second, but the Rangers responded with three more in the third period. Along with Matheson, Jared McCann netted his 10th goal of the season in the first period, while Jake Guentzel and Brian Dumolin scored in the third.
The Penguins also lost defenseman John Marino after he exited the game in the third period with an undisclosed injury. He is still being evaluated and his status is to be determined.
After the game, Bryan Rust said the Pens looked lost on the ice.
Head Coach Mike Sullivan said that this loss came after the Pens lost focus after their recent streak of success.
He said that while his team generated good looks on the offensive side of the puck, the Penguins also gave New York lots of scoring chances.
Pittsburgh, now 24-13-2 on the season, will look for redemption on Thursday as the Penguins play the Rangers in the series finale.
