Phillip Evans brought the Pirates within a run in the eighth inning, but Craig Kimbrel would stop the rally and seal a 4-3 win for Chicago in Sunday’s series finale.
Evans went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a trio of singles and Colin Moran drove in two after hitting his first home run of the season in the sixth. Mitch Keller threw 77 pitches in three innings of his first start of 2021, and he gave up three earned runs while walking four batters.
The Pirates are now 1-2 on the season and will start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. The Reds won their opening series against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend.
ROSTER MOVES:
Third basemen Ke’Bryan Hayes (wrist) was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday’s game. Infielder Wilmer Difo was added to the 40-man roster and recalled from the alternate training site, and RHP Tyler Bashlor was designated for assignment to make room.
Manager Derek Shelton said that the move was made after Hayes experienced discomfort in fielding ground balls, citing that it was hard for him to squeeze his mitt.
The Pirates also activated RHP Kyle Crick from the paternity list. Wil Crowe was optioned to the alternate training site.
