On Friday, the Penguins announced that they will be teaming up with the Buffalo Sabres to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities in the NHL’s first “Pride Game,” which will be held on April 17.
The team said in a tweet that this night “aims to bring together two cities to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities by sharing stories of inclusion, hope and allyship.” Prior to the game, players from each team will wear commemorative pride warm-up jerseys with a Progress Pride Flag, and they will be taping their sticks rainbow. The team also said that pucks used in pregame warmups will also have a colorful design.
All of these items, along with autographed memorabilia, will then be auctioned off online after the game. The auction will run until April 24 at noon. All proceeds will go towards You Can Play – an organization that aims to promote athletes regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression – and the Pittsburgh Tigers – an LGBTQ+ hockey team based in New Kensington.
