In his Pirates debut, Tyler Anderson struck out seven while giving up only five hits and three runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pirates, 5-1, Saturday afternoon.
Kevin Newman provided the Bucs’ only run in the first after driving in Ke’Bryan Hayes on a single to center. Hayes would exit the game with a left-wrist injury in the second inning, and Pirates’ manager Derek Shelton said that his wrist caught the knob of the bat awkwardly after Hayes fouled a pitch off. No further details on the extent of his injury are available yet.
UPDATE (as of 9:15 p.m.): MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman reports that x-rays came back negative on Hayes’s wrist. While no specific details came out about his injury, he is only expected to be out for a few days.
The Cubs would bounce back to score four unanswered runs throughout the remainder of the game. Two came off solo home runs by Kris Bryant and Jason Heyward.
With the loss, the Pirates are 1-1 on the season and both teams will finish the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 2:20 p.m. You can hear all the action beginning at 1:55 p.m. on WCCS AM 1160 and 101.1 FM.
