Multiple brush fires were reported yesterday in Indiana County, including one that brought in fire crews from Westmoreland, Cambria and Armstrong counties to help fight it.
The large fire was in the area of Elders Ridge Road and Sportsmen’s Road in Saltsburg, according to Iselin-West Lebanon Fire Department. In a statement on Facebook, the fire was large and spread rapidly due to the winds driving the fire on. As the fire progressed, units were called in from surrounding counties to assist, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources were also called in to provide a helicopter to drop water on the fires. An estimated 43 acres of ground was damaged in the fire. A total of 29 fire companies assisted, along with several forestry crews, the Salvation Army and four EMS units.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. See photos from that fire here on the Iselin/West Lebanon VFC Facebook page.
Other brush fires were reported on Klimkos Road in Young Township at 1:13 PM, with Coal Run firefighters responding; on Shrokman Road in Young Township at 2:22 PM, with Aultman, Elderton and Creekside initially dispatched; and one on Bethel Cemetery Road in West Wheatfield Township at 4:49 PM. Armagh and Clyde fire departments were dispatched to the scene. A second brush fire was reported on Klimkos road at 8:06 PM. Black Lick firefighters responded to that call.
Yesterday’s activity brings the total number of brush fires up to 51 in Indiana County since the start of the year.
