A former SCI-Pine Grove inmate convicted in the death of his cellmate in early 2019 will be back before a judge today for a post-sentence motion hearing.
44-year-old Dwight Bowen will have a hearing today in front of Senior Judge William Martin concerning his sentence for a charge of third-degree murder that was handed down in December of 2020 for the death of 32-year-old Luis Santiago. On January 1st, 2019, Bowen called for guards shortly after 10 PM. When the guards arrived, they found Santiago unresponsive on the floor of the cell they shared, without a pulse and not breathing. An autopsy showed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to venous obstruction. Bowen was sentenced to 20-40 years in state prison.
Today’s hearing concerns a request from Bowen to modify his sentence. The hearing had been set for last month but was continued at that time to today.
Bowen is currently serving a life sentence at SCI-Greene County for guilty pleas to the 2001 murders of two toddlers, ages 3 and 1, in a Molotov cocktail firebombing of a row house in Philadelphia after a dispute between Bowen and another man.
