Indiana County’s unemployment rate went up to start the new year.
The PA Department of Labor and Industry reported that in January, the county’s unemployment rate went up by 1.1 percentage points to 7.8 percent. This is above both the state and country’s unemployment rate, which are 7.3 percent and 6.3 percent respectively.
In the surrounding area, Cambria County is tied with Indiana at 7.8 percent. Jefferson County’s rate is 7.3 percent. Westmoreland County has a 7.7 percent unemployment rate. Clearfield county’s rate is 8.0 percent and Armstrong County’s is the highest in the region at 8.3 percent.
The lowest unemployment rate in the state is in Chester County at 5.0 percent, with the highest being Philadelphia at 11.1 percent.
The total number of non-farm jobs in the county went down by 1700 to 27,600. Jobs were mainly unchanged or down over the month in all of the major super sectors. The largest movements were seasonal in nature. The biggest decline was 900 jobs in the government super sector, but most of that was due to the winter break at IUP.
