Tampa Bay won its seventh Spring Training game Wednesday afternoon after beating the Pirates, 10-9. Both teams combined for 19 total runs and 5 home runs on the afternoon, with the Rays scoring 8 runs off starter Mitch Keller in the first three innings.
Former Pirate Austin Meadows took Keller deep in the third to extend the Rays’ lead to 8-1. The Pirates offense sparked in the middle innings after home runs by Bryan Reynolds and Colin Moran, alongside doubles by Nick Gonzales and Jared Oliva. The production brought the Bucs within a run at the end of six.
The Rays tallied their tenth run off Richard Rodriguez in the eighth which was enough insurance to secure the win. Gonzales brought the Bucs within a run in the ninth inning, but two fly outs would end the game at 10-9.
Pittsburgh sits at 8-8-1 in the spring and will return to action on Friday to face the Baltimore Orioles at 1 p.m.
