During the first day of the NFL’s free agency, the Steelers made two moves, as they resigned cornerback Cam Sutton to a multi-year deal.
Gerry Dulac of the Steelers Radio Network reported that Sutton’s contract is good for two years and is worth $9 million. The former third-round pick out of Tennessee played in 16 games last season in which he collected 27 solo tackles, one sack and one interception. Sutton was set to hit the free agent market this week if a deal wasn’t reached.
The Steelers also signed Kevin Colbert to a one-year extension as the team’s general manager. ESPN insider Field Yates reported in a tweet that the extension will run through the 2022 NFL Draft.
Two former Steelers sign with new teams:
While the Steelers were able to keep Sutton, linebacker Bud Dupree and offensive lineman Matt Feiler will dawn new uniforms in the 2021 season. Dupree signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, who ranked near the bottom of the NFL’s pass rushing attacks in 2020. Dupree missed most of the 2020 season with a knee injury.
He was a part of the Steelers’ linebacker core since 2015 and since then he’s accumulated 39.5 total sacks, 169 solo tackles and earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2019.
Also departing from Pittsburgh was offensive lineman Matt Feiler, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 28-year-old started in 40 games for the Steelers since 2016 where he played right tackle.
Other notable football news from Monday:
Quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement from in a social media post on Monday, after spending 20 seasons in the NFL with the Chargers and New Orleans Saints. Brees was named to 13 Pro Bowls, won the 2006 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and led the Saints to their first Super Bowl championship in 2009 when he also won Super Bowl MVP honors.
Because of this announcement, the Saints resigned Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, who platooned the QB role in 2020 while Brees was out with an injury.
