Women’s LAX kicks off PSAC play with win over Slippery Rock:
After falling to No. 11 Grand Valley State on Friday, IUP returned to Miller Stadium to open conference play against Slippery Rock on Sunday and sailed to a 12-8 win.
Leah Hunter and Jordan Kulp contributed to the offensive attack, as they combined for eight of IUP’s twelve goals on the afternoon. Kulp would add three assists to her statline – tying her career high – and went one-for-one on free position opportunities.
As a team, IUP controlled more draws than The Rock, 13-9, while committing only nine turnovers.
The win evens IUP’s record at 1-1 on the season and they’ll face Seton Hill at home this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Softball splits Sunday doubleheader at Cal U:
IUP faced a 6-1 deficit in the final innings of Sunday’s game one at Cal U, but two home runs by Renee Wall and Jenna Rhue sparked the rally that put the Crimson Hawks ahead of the Vulcans. After Jacey Henderson and Rachel Rodriguez added four runs of insurance in the seventh, IUP completed the comeback to take game one, 10-6.
Hope Jones earned her second win on the mound, as she threw 171 total pitches in the game and collected 12 strikeouts.
Cal U would get retribution in game two as they held IUP to a pair of runs in a 4-2 win. Wall and Bella Bucy drove in IUP’s two runs in the seventh inning off two singles, but Vulcans pitcher Kaitlyn Leary retired Faith Jones on a groundout to end the game.
IUP is now 5-2 on the season and will face Mercyhurst in PSAC action this Friday.
Baseball drops Saturday doubleheader to Frostburg St.:
IUP plated seven runs in the seventh frame to bring them within two runs of Frostburg State, but the Bobcats came out on top, 10-8. Nick Hess had a multi-hit game, hitting two singles and driving in a run, while designated hitter, Austin Mueller, tallied three RBIs.
JP Pellis faced 16 batters in 2.1 innings of work, while Tyler Diefenbach struck out a pair in 4.2 innings of relief.
In game two, the Bobcats collected nine extra base hits and outscored IUP 8-1 in the first four innings as they cruised to a 20-3 win. Harrison Pontolli collected two hits for IUP in the game while Billy Perroz hit his first double on the season.
The Crimson Hawks will look to rebound on Tuesday with a two-game road series against non-conference opponent, Mount Aloysius.
