A stout pitching performance combined with efficient offensive production was enough for the Phillies to hand the Pirates their second straight loss after beating them, 6-5, on Sunday.
Jacob Stallings got the Bucs on the board in the first inning with a solo home run to left. Infielder Rodolfo Castro brought the Pirates within a run after clearing the bases with a grand slam in the seventh, giving him a home run in back-to-back games.
Pittsburgh’s comeback attempt was thwarted in the ninth after Will Craig was tagged out by Darick Hall. Craig was initially called safe after reaching first on a ground ball, but was called out after Hall tagged him in fair territory while he was retrieving his helmet.
The loss puts the Bucs at 7-6-1 this spring, and they’ll be on the road on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is 1 p.m.
