The Crimson Hawks returned to Ruth Podbielski Field for a two-game series against the California (Pa.) Vulcans on Saturday. IUP’s late-game offense in the first game put them over Cal U, 6-5, but the Vulcans bounced back to take game two, 14-5.
Game One:
Fifth-year infielder Kaitlyn Beers had a strong performance at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the contest. She also drove in the winning run in the seventh inning that eclipsed the Crimson Hawk victory.
Along with Beers, sophomore Haleigh Zimmerman also had three hits in the game, while Hope Jones tallied 12 punch-outs through seven innings on the mound.
As a team, IUP collected 11 hits on 28 plate appearances and only left four runners on base.
Game Two:
Cal U jumped out to a 4-2 lead after three innings, but would post a 4-spot in both the fourth and fifth innings that helped propel the Vulcans to a 14-5 game two win.
Kaitlyn Beers continued her formidable day at the plate as she hit a two-run home run in the third inning to close the Vulcan lead to two. Rachel Rodriguez and Renee Wahl drove in three runs in the fifth inning, however Cal’s Kaitlyn Leary would retire the Crimson Hawk lineup in the later innings.
IUP softball now holds a record of 4-2 on the season and they’ll travel to California on Sunday for a two-game road series with the Vulcans.
