Everything went perfectly for the Penguins Thursday night as they not only handed the Buffalo Sabres their ninth consecutive loss, but gave Mike Sullivan his 300th win as a head coach.
Pittsburgh won by the score of 5-2, after posting four goals within the final two periods. Evgeni Malkin and Kasperi Kapanen continued to impress as an offensive duo, as Geno put them on the board in the first period with Kapanen on the assist. The Sabres, however, would even the scoring at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Jake Guentzel gave Pittsburgh the lead back at the 11:36 mark in the second frame after finding the twine on a power play opportunity, while Bryan Rust and Anthony Angello netted the final pair in the third to seal the win.
With the win, the Penguins are now 16-9 on the season, placing them third in the NHL East Division standings.
After the game, Sullivan gave his thoughts on etching the milestone, saying it was all thanks to the players he’s coached.
Sullivan also commented on the connection between Malkin and Kapanen, citing that each has a skill-set that connects well.
Angello, who grew up close to Buffalo, told reporters after the game that playing and scoring against his hometown team was a surreal moment and that his teammates helped set him up for it.
Pittsburgh returns to the ice on Saturday to finish the two-game series against Buffalo. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
