Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate rose slightly in the month of January.
The state Department of Labor and Industry reported that the unemployment rate for January went up to 7.3 percent, an increase of two-tenths of a percentage point. The state’s unemployment rate is two percentage points higher than where it was last year at that time. The federal unemployment rate went down in January to 6.3 percent, representing a four-tenth of a percentage point decrease.
Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force went down by 15,000 people over the month to 6,295,000 people. The number of non-farm jobs increased by 35,700 to 5,638,100 jobs in January. That essentially wiped out the drop in jobs in December of 2020. Jobs increased in four of 11 industry super sectors with the largest volume gain seen in professional and business services, who saw an increase of 12,100 jobs.
