Slippery Rock swept the IUP Crimson Hawks in a two-game series Friday afternoon at Slippery Rock. The final scores were 7-5 in game one and 9-2 in game two.
Game One:
IUP was held scoreless until the fifth inning when sophomore infielder Harrison Pontoli drove in a pair on a single to right, and in the sixth inning when IUP would take a tentative 5-3 lead off three runs. However, The Rock strung together four runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge the Crimson Hawks and take a 7-5 game one victory.
Starting pitcher Ben Hudock struck out five batters over 5.1 innings pitched. He would be credited with a no-decision.
Game Two:
Slippery Rock pounced on IUP’s pitching throughout the first three innings, outscoring the Crimson Hawks 5-1 and giving them an early lead. The Rock would limit IUP to two total runs on the game, while tacking on four more runs in the final four frames, sealing a 9-2 win.
The Crimson Hawk offensive production came off the bats of outfielder Chris Eisel and utility man Nick Hess. Eisel opened the IUP scoring in the first with a solo home run to left field, his first of the year. Hess went 2 for 3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
IUP now holds a 1-3 record to open up the 2021 season and they will face non-conference opponent Frostburg St. in a two-game home series this Saturday. Game times are noon and 2 p.m..
