JP Pellis pitched four-and-a-third innings, struck out five, and gave up just one hit as IUP won its season opener, 5-1 over Malone at Owen J. Dougherty Field yesterday afternoon. Malone came back for a 12-6 win in Game Two of the doubleheader.
In the opener, IUP scored 4 runs in the second inning, including back-to-back RBI singles by Ben Teplin and Chris Eisel before a bases-clearing double by Nick Hess. Mark Edeburn finished up the win with two-and-two-thirds innings, striking out four and also surrendering only one hit.
In the second game, Malone scored five times in the second inning to jump to a 6-1 lead. Homer Center graduate Nate Davis and Jayson Wilbur pitched the final three-and-two-thirds innings, combining for five strikeouts and no hits.
IUP returns to action this Friday with a doubleheader at Slippery Rock, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at home against Frostburg State.
