Three unanswered goals in the first period were enough to carry the Penguins to their second straight win Sunday night, as they defeated the New York Rangers, 5-1, at PPG Paints Arena.
The Rangers opened the scoring within the first two minutes of the game, however, the trio of John Marino, Kasperi Kapanen and Sidney Crosby posted three goals in less than a minute to give Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Both teams held each other scoreless in the second frame, but Evgeni Malkin and Zach Aston-Reese each provided a goal to ice the win for the Penguins in the third.
Casey DeSmith was proficient from in front of the net as he made 23 total saves out of 24 attempts.
The Penguins are now 14-9-1 on the season and will return to the ice on Tuesday to finish up the series against New York.
