The Pirates’ offense got off to a hot start in Bradenton Sunday afternoon as they took down the Baltimore Orioles, 13-1, for their second consecutive win.
In his first game since experiencing a groin injury last season, Adam Frazier went 2-3 with an RBI double in the second inning. Joining him with 2 hits in the game were Kevin Newman and Ji-Hwan Bae. Dustin Fowler continued his dominant spring by driving in three runs on a double in the fourth.
Pirates pitchers mowed down Baltimore hitters as they posted 10 combined strikeouts and limiting the Orioles to only one run and five hits in the game. Relievers Chasen Shreve, Clay Holmes and David Bednar combined for three perfect innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
The Bucs are now 4-3-1 on the spring with a 3-1 performance at LECOM Park. They have the day off on Monday and will return to action on Tuesday to face the Atlanta Braves.
TRADE ALERT:
The Pirates were busy in the front office on Sunday, as they acquired RHP Duane Underwood Jr. from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Shendrik Apostel.
Underwood, 26, was the Cubs 2nd round pick in 2012 and pitched in 17 games with the Cubs during the truncated 2020 regular season, allowing just 25 hits in 20 innings of relief. He also struck out a career-high 27 batters last season.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Bucs designated RHP Carson Fulmer for assignment.
