Today marks one year to the day that the first two presumed positive cases of coronavirus were announced in Pennsylvania.
Since the start of the pandemic, over 994,000 cases of Covid-19 and over 24,000 covid-19-related deaths have been reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. As of yesterday, Indiana County has had 5,114 cases of Covid-19 reported along with 160 deaths. During the pandemic, schools have closed and adapted to using technology to educate students, local governments have met remotely using platforms like Zoom and Google Meet to hold their monthly meetings, and people have remained physically distant from their family and friends. Governor Tom Wolf said that being apart from their loved ones has made the last year extremely difficult.
Now, people are getting vaccinated for Covid-19 using medicine from Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson. The state is now in phase 1-A of its vaccine rollout, with the announcement that Pre-K to 12 educators would be fast-tracked to receive the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Governor Wolf says the state is on the right track to return to some sense of normal.
Recently, Governor Wolf lifted travel restrictions that forced people leaving the state and coming back in to test negative for Covid-19 or enter into quarantine, and easing restrictions on indoor and outdoor events. Wolf said that he is eager to lift other restrictions, but wants to do so “responsibly and reasonably”.
