Governor Tom Wolf announced Wednesday Morning that Pennsylvania will use the one-shot Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine for Pre-K to 12th Grade teachers and staffers at schools across the state.
In his statement, Wolf said that Pennsyvania’s Emergency Management Agency and the Departments of Education and Health will work with the state’s 28 Intermediate Units to set up vaccination sites in each IU. Members of the PA National Guard and AMI Expeditionary Healthcare will administer the vaccine at those sites. This will be separate from the statewide vaccine plan, which is currently in phase 1-A. Priority will be given to teachers and staffers who have regular and sustained in-person contact with students during the school day.
Last weekend, the Federal Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized the Johnson and Johnson vaccine for emergency use. Pennsylvania is set to receive 94,600 doses this week, and Governor Wolf expects more to come.
About 200,000 school employees would be eligible for the vaccine under this initiative.
