The Pirates fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-1, in a six-inning contest in Port Charlotte, giving them a 1-2-1 Spring Training record.
Wander Franco, the No. 1 prospect in the MLB, opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run off Miguel Yajure – the right-handed pitching prospect the Pirates acquired in the Jameson Taillon trade with the New York Yankees. Former Pirates outfielder Austin Meadows iced the game with a two-run shot in the fifth.
The lone run for Pittsburgh came in the sixth inning when Troy Stokes Jr. scored on an error committed by Rays outfielder Garrett Whitley. In his first start of the spring, left-hander Steven Brault struck out one hitter while only allowing one walk and no hits.
