Tonight, members of the Pennsylvania Republican Party Committee will meet to decide whether or not to censure U.S. Senator Pat Toomey over his vote during the second impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Toomey was one of seven Republicans who voted in favor of convicting the former president on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” during the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. Trump spoke at a “Save America” rally that day, repeating claims of election irregularities and encouraging people to protest the results of the election. After his speech, a number of people stormed the capitol while a joint session of congress certifying the electoral college vote count was going on.
In the days after the riot, Toomey called on President Trump to resign, believing that there would not be enough time to impeach the president before Joe Biden was sworn in as President on January 20th. While the vote was 57-43 in favor of convicting Trump, the vote fell short of the two-thirds needed to convict, so Trump was acquitted. In a statement after the impeachment trial, Toomey called the former president’s conduct unacceptable.
The PA Republican Party Committee vote tonight would officially condemn Toomey’s actions, but it will not remove him from office. Toomey has also publicly stated that he will not seek re-election.
