There are changes coming this spring to telephone customers using the 814 area code, which covers all or part of 26 counties across western Pennsylvania, including a small portion of Indiana County. The Public Utility Commission says that starting on April 3rd, those phone users will have to dial the 814 area code when making a call.
The 724 area code, which is the primary area code in Indiana County, has used the ten-digit dialing procedure since its creation in February of 1998.
Ten-digit dialing has been available in 814 since October but has not been mandatory. It will become the only method by which calls can be made at the start of April. The change was necessary because the 7.9 million numbers available in the area code are almost all allotted.
