Pirates pitchers and catchers report to Bradenton today, with the first formal workouts scheduled tomorrow. The rest of the team is scheduled to report on Monday and workout on Tuesday.
MLB last week adjusted the Pirates Grapefruit League schedule, making Sunday, February 28th the first game, when the Bucs will visit the Orioles in Sarasota. The home opener at LECOM Park will be Tuesday, March 2nd against the Tigers.
A day after signing former Pirates’ closer Mark Melancon, the San Diego Padres have come to a contract agreement with former Bucs’ reliever Keone Kela. The Padres also added former Pirate Joe Musgrove this offseason in a trade, and they signed ex-Cubs ace Yu Darvish and Rays ace Blake Snell.
Former Pirates’ reliever Jared Hughes has retired from baseball. The 35-year-old played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball after being drafted in the fourth round by the Pirates in 2006. In six seasons as a Buc, Hughes was 15-13 with 3 saves and a 2.96 ERA in 313 games. He also played for the Brewers, Reds, and Phillies, and finished his career last year with the Mets.
