Just back from an eight-game absence due to injury, Penguins defenseman Mike Matheson left practice yesterday with an undisclosed injury after colliding with a teammate. Matheson returned to action on Saturday against the New York Islanders. He skated off under his own power yesterday after laying on the ice for several minutes.
Coach Mike Sullivan said yesterday that forward Jared McCann is still being evaluated for a lower body injury suffered in the Islanders game. Injured defenseman Marcus Petterson has resumed skating, working out with the taxi squad.
Sullivan says that pandemic postponements and injuries are just a reality for his and every other team in the NHL, and the coaches constantly remind the players that they have to work through it.
The Penguins hit the ice again on Thursday, back on Long Island against the Islanders. Meanwhile, the NHL has rescheduled eight games missed because of covid-19, including tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. That will now played in Jersey on March 18th, followed by another rescheduled game at New Jersey on the 20th of March. Then, the Pens will host the Devils the following day, host Buffalo on March 25th, followed by a visit by the Islanders on March 27th, a trip to New Jersey on April 9th, to Buffalo on April 18th, and home for New Jersey on April 20th.
The NHL is postponing seven more games involving the Devils, Sabres, and Wild due to COVID-19.
