State police have announced that a few scams are making their way into the area.
Troopers at the Indiana barracks say that they have received at least three calls reporting a phone scam where the scammer tells the victim that they are with Amazon, advising them of a problem with a recent purchase on their account. The scammer also provided them with a phone number to call Amazon to discuss the problem. The victims recognized that it was a scam and reported it to police. The victims did not suffer any monetary loss.
Police also received a report of a scam email advising them of a problem with a security software purchase, and the email also included a fraudulent phone number to be used as a way to contact customer service. Those who reported this scam to police did not suffer any financial loss.
People are advised to discuss common scams with family members and verify the legitimacy of suspicious phone calls, emails and text messages before providing any personal information. When in doubt, you can call police to discuss any suspicious activity. The Federal Trade Commission have provided tips on protecting yourself against scams on their website.
