The Penguins are getting healthier heading into tomorrow’s scheduled game against the New York Islanders. Yesterday, three injured players, defensemen Kris Letang and Mike Matheson and forward Zach Aston-Reese put in full practices with no restrictions, and an indication that they may be ready to play is the fact that the Pens made all three available for media.
Letang skated with rookie P-O Joseph on the top pairing. Matheseon skated with Cody Ceci.
The up-tempo practice focused on special teams, especially the struggling power play. Coach Mike Sullivan says both the power play and the penalty kill need a lot of work.
Kris Letang talked about creating good shooting lanes on the power play.
Offseason acquisition Mike Matheson played only two games with the Penguins before he was injured. He says he is healthy now and ready to play.
Sidelined by offseason shoulder surgery, Zach Aston-Reese will slot into the third or fourth line, which he says is physically demanding, so he has to be sure his repaired shoulder can take it.
The Penguins reportedly did a Zoom interview with former Flyers goalie and general manager Ron Hextall in their search for a replacement for Jim Rutherford, who resigned last week as the team’s GM. Hextall lived in Pittsburgh as a boy while his dad, Bryan, played for the Pens. He is currently a senior advisor to the L.A. Kings.
The Islanders game tomorrow faces off shortly after 7. Airtime on 92.5 FM U92 is 6:00.
The NHL is tightening up its COVID-19 protocols. The league will remove the glass behind the team’s benches to help with airflow. Other changes include virtual meetings, adjusting the arrival time before games, and expanded locker room space between dressing stalls.
