For the third consecutive game, the Pittsburgh Penguins needed more than 60 minutes to decide a winner, as they won in a 4-3 shootout win over the New York Rangers.
Bryan Rust kicked off the scoring column with a goal in the middle of the first period, his first of the season. The Pens’ defense held New York scoreless into the first intermission, however New York netted three unanswered goals coming from Filip Chytil, Adam Fox and Kaapo Kakko in the opening minutes of the second period to put the Rangers up 3-1. Jared McCann would post a Power Play goal before the intermission to bring the Pens within one heading into the final frame.
Teddy Blueger evened the game up at 3-3 with his second goal on the year at the halfway mark through the third period, which would ultimately send the game into overtime. With no goals coming about, the game went into the shootout, where Pittsburgh outshot New York 2-1.
Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang made both goals for the Pens while Artemi Panarin scored the lone shootout goal for the Rangers.
After the game, Coach Mike Sullivan said that while the team fought hard after the three goals by New York, the Penguins need to play better through all three frames.
Letang said that the team will take the points and the wins, but they need to do better starting out.
Pittsburgh is now on a three-game winning streak with a 3-2 overall record on the season. They return to the ice on Sunday to finish a two-game series with the Rangers. The game will be aired on 92.5 FM, U92 and the U92 Sports Channel with the pregame show at 6 p.m. and puck drop at 7.
